About Ethiopia

Ethiopia, historically called Abyssinia, occupies the Horn of Africa in the continent’s eastern region. Spanning roughly twice the area of France, it is home to approximately 120 million people. The country shares borders with Eritrea and Djibouti (northeast), Somalia (east/southeast), Kenya (south), and Sudan (west). Dominating Ethiopia’s terrain is a vast volcanic plateau, averaging 2,000 meters in elevation, which gradually slopes downward toward its borders. The Great Rift Valley originating at the Red Sea in Jordan, cuts through Ethiopia’s Danakil Depression before extending southward into Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique. Renowned as the “Cradle of Humankind”, Ethiopia holds pivotal evidence of human evolution. The discovery of “Lucy”, a 3.5-million-year-old hominid fossil, in the Hadar region of the Rift Valley underscores this legacy. Ethiopia’s enduring cultural identity remains uniquely preserved, bolstered by its status as one of the few African nations to maintain independence throughout modern history.
